About Doha
Doha became the capital of Qatar when the country declared full independence from British protection in 1971. Before the discovery of oil in 1940 and the subsequent development of natural gas fields, Doha was a modest settlement whose economy depended on pearl fishing and trade. The transformation since then has been among the most dramatic of any capital in the world: Qatar now holds the world's third-largest proven natural gas reserves, and Doha has grown into a city of glass towers, international institutions, and an outsized diplomatic presence. Qatar hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military base in the Middle East, while simultaneously maintaining relationships with Hamas, the Taliban, and the Muslim Brotherhood, a balancing strategy that has made Doha a key mediation venue for major regional conflicts, including the Hamas-Israel conflict from 2023. This approach led to a diplomatic crisis in 2017 when Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt blockaded Qatar for three and a half years before the blockade was lifted in 2021. Doha hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first held in the Arab world.
About Qatar
Qatar is an absolute monarchy governed by the Al Thani family, which has ruled since the mid-19th century. The current emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has held power since 2013. Qatar has no elected parliament in the conventional sense, though advisory council elections have been held. The country's wealth, generated almost entirely from liquefied natural gas exports, funds a state that provides extensive social services and employs the majority of Qatari nationals in the public sector. Migrant workers constitute approximately 85-90% of Qatar's population.

Frequently Asked Questions
When did Qatar become independent and Doha its capital?
Qatar declared full independence from British protection on 3 September 1971. Doha has been the country's administrative center since the 19th century, when the Al Thani family established control. Before oil and gas revenues transformed it, Doha was a small coastal pearl-fishing settlement.
Why is Doha considered an important diplomatic capital?
Doha serves as a mediation venue for multiple major conflicts due to Qatar's policy of maintaining dialogue with groups that other states refuse to engage. Hamas has a political office in Doha, the Taliban maintains a political presence there, and Qatar has brokered negotiations in the Hamas-Israel conflict, the Afghan peace process, and various other regional disputes.
What was the 2017 Gulf blockade of Qatar?
In June 2017, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt severed diplomatic ties and imposed a land, sea, and air blockade on Qatar, presenting a list of 13 demands including closing Al Jazeera and severing ties with Iran and Hamas. Qatar refused to comply, and the blockade lasted until January 2021, when it was lifted under the Al-Ula Declaration.
Is Doha the largest city in Qatar?
Yes, Doha is the largest city in Qatar and contains the vast majority of the country's population. Qatar's total population is approximately 2.7 million, of which around 85-90% are migrant workers. Doha and its immediate surroundings house most of this population.
What is the significance of the Al Udeid Air Base near Doha?
Al Udeid Air Base, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Doha, is the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East, hosting around 10,000 U.S. personnel and serving as the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Qatar's simultaneous hosting of a major U.S. base and relationships with groups like Hamas illustrates its deliberate multi-directional foreign policy.
