About Yamoussoukro

Yamoussoukro holds the formal title of capital of Ivory Coast, but the country effectively operates with a split capital arrangement. President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who was born in Yamoussoukro and dominated Ivorian politics from independence in 1960 until his death in 1993, declared it the official capital in 1983. The decision was widely seen as a personal and political act, an effort to develop his home region and cement his legacy, rather than one driven by administrative logic. The practical reality is that Abidjan, the former colonial capital and the country's largest city, continues to function as the actual seat of government. Most ministries, foreign embassies, the judiciary, and economic institutions are based in Abidjan. The National Assembly and Supreme Court are nominally headquartered in Yamoussoukro, but day-to-day governmental activity overwhelmingly takes place in Abidjan. Yamoussoukro's most prominent structure is the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, commissioned by Houphouët-Boigny and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990. Built at enormous expense, it exceeds St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in volume and is the world's largest church by that measure. Yamoussoukro's designation as capital is one of the clearest examples in the world of a symbolic capital with no substantive governmental function.

About Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) is a presidential republic in West Africa. It experienced a civil war from 2002 to 2007 and a post-election crisis in 2010-2011 following disputed results. Abidjan functions as the economic and de facto governmental capital, while Yamoussoukro holds the official designation. The country is the world's largest producer of cocoa, which remains the foundation of its export economy. Alassane Ouattara has served as president since 2011.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is Yamoussoukro the capital of Ivory Coast if the government is in Abidjan?

President Félix Houphouët-Boigny declared Yamoussoukro, his birthplace, the official capital in 1983, a largely symbolic political decision. The existing infrastructure, institutions, and diplomatic presence in Abidjan were never relocated, so Abidjan continues to function as the practical seat of government.

  • Does Ivory Coast have two capitals?

Ivory Coast has one official capital, Yamoussoukro, but operates as a de facto split-capital state. Yamoussoukro holds the formal designation, while Abidjan is home to most government ministries, foreign embassies, the supreme court, and the country's economic activity. Many sources list Abidjan as the administrative capital.

  • What is the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace?

The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro was built by President Houphouët-Boigny at personal and state expense and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990. By volume, it is the largest Christian church in the world, surpassing St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Its construction in a small city with limited population was highly controversial given Ivory Coast's level of development at the time.

  • When did Ivory Coast gain independence?

Ivory Coast gained independence from France on 7 August 1960. Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who had been a prominent figure in French colonial politics, became the country's first president and governed until his death in 1993.

  • Is Yamoussoukro the largest city in Ivory Coast?

No. Abidjan is by far the largest city in Ivory Coast, with a population of over 5 million, making it one of the largest cities in West Africa. Yamoussoukro has a population of around 355,000. The significant size disparity between the nominal capital and the actual economic center is one reason the capital transfer was never functionally completed.

Sights and landmarks

The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, consecrated in 1990, is Yamoussoukro's defining landmark: a replica of St. Peter's in Rome, with a 158-metre dome, 7,000 m² of Italian marble and a capacity of 18,000 seated and 300,000 standing worshippers, making it the world's largest church by volume. The Houphouët-Boigny Foundation Palace houses the mausoleum of the first president. The Hôtel Président, a 13-storey early modernist icon, and the crocodile pond at the presidential palace (where tame sacred crocodiles are fed) are popular attractions. The wide, oversized empty boulevards are themselves a museum piece of post-colonial idealism.

Climate and best time to visit

Yamoussoukro lies in the transition zone between tropical rainforest and savanna and has a typical tropical savanna climate. Temperature fluctuates year-round between 22 and 33°C. Two rainy seasons dominate: a long one from May to July and a short one from September to November, with annual rainfall of around 1,100 mm. The dry season from December to February is characterised by the dusty harmattan wind from the Sahara and is the best travel period for Yamoussoukro. Humidity is oppressively high in the wet season, remaining above 80%.

Economy

Yamoussoukro's economy is modest, dominated by agriculture (cocoa, coffee, palm oil) and small-scale trade around the central market. The city lies in the Baoulé cocoa heartland of Côte d'Ivoire, the world's largest cocoa producer with around 40% of global supply and billions of dollars in exports annually. The Institut National Polytechnique Houphouët-Boigny (INP-HB), founded in 1996, is a top institution for engineering and commerce in West Africa. Administrative employment is limited because most ministries have remained in Abidjan; the National Assembly only meets here occasionally. Religious tourism around the basilica generates limited but growing revenues for Yamoussoukro.
