About Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a Central African country, the second-largest country in Africa, renowned for its vast, dense rainforests (part of the Congo Basin), the mighty Congo River, and its incredible biodiversity, including endangered species like mountain gorillas and okapi. Sights and landmarks

The National Museum of the DRC, opened in 2019 with South Korean support, holds more than 12,000 ethnographic objects from all Congolese provinces. The Palace of the Nation on Boulevard du 30 Juin is the official presidential residence. The Marché Central and the riverside promenade Beach Ngobila offer views of Brazzaville on the opposite bank of the Congo River. The Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa is a cradle of Congolese modern art. Symphonie des Arts and the Stade des Martyrs (80,000 seats) — one of Africa's largest stadiums — are among the city's defining symbols.

Climate and best time to visit

Kinshasa has a tropical savanna climate with a long rainy season from October to May and a dry season from June to September. Temperatures hover year-round between 21 and 31°C. Annual rainfall totals around 1,500 mm, with November and April as the wettest months. The dry season is overcast and cool (around 25°C) and is the best travel period for visitors to Kinshasa, with minimal risk of tropical downpours. Humidity remains high throughout the year, generally above 70%.

Regional significance

Kinshasa, with around 17 million inhabitants, is the world's largest French-speaking city — larger than Paris — and the third-largest city in Africa after Lagos and Cairo. Together with Brazzaville on the opposite bank it forms a densely populated urban conurbation of more than 19 million people. Kinshasa is a key hub of Congolese rumba, added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2021 and birthplace of world stars such as Papa Wemba and Koffi Olomide. The DRC holds more than 60% of the world's cobalt reserves.

Culture and customs

Kinshasa's culture revolves around music, fashion and language. Lingala, a trade language along the Congo River, is the informal lingua franca alongside official French. Soukous, ndombolo and hip-hop variants dominate the music clubs of the Matonge neighbourhood. The Sapeurs movement shares a designer suit tradition with Brazzaville. Moambe, a chicken and palm nut stew, is considered the national dish, followed by fufu (cassava puree) and liboke (fish steamed in banana leaves). Pentecostal churches and Catholicism share the religious space, with a strong presence of charismatic prophet movements drawing hundreds of thousands of followers.

Economy

Kinshasa concentrates the Congolese banking sector, telecoms and administrative spending. The Congo River port is the most important inland navigation hub in Central Africa, connecting the city to Kisangani and production areas in the interior. The urban economy relies heavily on the informal sector: street trading, moto-taxis and retail. Mining in Katanga (cobalt, copper, coltan) generates most of the DRC's export income and is fiscally and administratively managed from Kinshasa; Glencore and CMOC are the largest international players. The Inga hydroelectric dams on the lower Congo supply electricity for heavy industry and export connections.
