About Bandar Seri Begawan

Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital of the Sultanate of Brunei, a sovereign absolute monarchy on the island of Borneo. The city was known as Brunei Town until 1970, when it was renamed in honor of the father of the reigning Sultan, Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who had abdicated in 1967. The renaming, Bandar Seri Begawan translates roughly as 'port of the revered lord' in Malay, reflected the centrality of royal authority to the state's identity. Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888 and remained under British protection even after neighboring territories became independent, only achieving full independence on 1 January 1984. Bandar Seri Begawan serves as the seat of the Sultan's government, housing the Istana Nurul Iman, the Sultan's official residence and the world's largest residential palace, as well as the Prime Minister's office (held by the Sultan himself), the Legislative Council, and the Supreme Court. Brunei's governance is guided by the national philosophy of Melayu Islam Beraja (Malay Islamic Monarchy), which fuses Malay cultural identity, Sunni Islamic principles, and monarchical authority. It is the smallest capital city in Southeast Asia by population.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why was the capital of Brunei renamed from Brunei Town to Bandar Seri Begawan?

The capital was renamed in 1970 to honor Sultan Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who had abdicated in 1967 in favor of his son, the current Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. 'Bandar Seri Begawan' means roughly 'port of the revered lord' in Malay, reflecting the monarchy's central place in Bruneian state identity.

  • When did Brunei gain independence and what is Bandar Seri Begawan's role?

Brunei gained full independence from Britain on 1 January 1984, having been a British protectorate since 1888. Bandar Seri Begawan became the capital of the fully sovereign state at that point. It is the seat of the Sultan's government, the location of the world's largest residential palace (Istana Nurul Iman), and the center of all state functions.

  • Is Bandar Seri Begawan the smallest capital in Southeast Asia?

Yes. With a population of approximately 100,000, Bandar Seri Begawan is the smallest capital city in Southeast Asia by population. Brunei itself has a total population of under 500,000, making it one of the smaller states in the region.

  • What is Melayu Islam Beraja?

Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB), meaning 'Malay Islamic Monarchy', is the national ideology of Brunei. It was articulated by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and remains the guiding philosophy of the state. MIB holds that Bruneian society and governance should be grounded in Malay cultural identity, Sunni Islamic values, and respect for royal authority. It is taught in schools and underpins the legal system.

  • Does Brunei have a democratic government?

No. Brunei is an absolute monarchy. The Sultan holds simultaneous executive, legislative, and religious authority. Political parties are not permitted to contest for government. The Legislative Council (Majlis Mesyuarat Negara) is appointed, not elected. Brunei has been under a state of emergency, renewed regularly, since 1962, which has been used to justify the concentration of power in the monarchy.
