About Bridgetown

Bridgetown has been the administrative center of Barbados since the island's first British settlement was established in 1628. As the seat of one of the Caribbean's oldest representative assemblies, the Barbados Parliament, which dates to 1639, the city has a political heritage that predates many European nations' democratic institutions. For over three centuries, Barbados was a British colony built on sugar production and enslaved African labor; Bridgetown was both the commercial capital of that system and the site of its administration. The most significant recent political development came on 30 November 2021, when Barbados became a republic, removing the British monarch as head of state and replacing the position with an elected President. Dame Sandra Mason was inaugurated as the first President. The transition was managed without a referendum and without leaving the Commonwealth, making it a legally smooth but politically notable act of constitutional change. Bridgetown's historic garrison area, built in the 17th and 18th centuries as a British military installation, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the island's historic center. Bridgetown is home to the Parliament Buildings, the Cabinet Office, and the Supreme Court.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When did Barbados become a republic?

Barbados became a republic on 30 November 2021, exactly 55 years after gaining independence from Britain. The British monarch was removed as head of state and replaced by an elected President. Dame Sandra Mason, who had been the Governor-General, became the country's first President. Barbados remained a member of the Commonwealth.

  • How old is the Barbados Parliament?

The Barbados Parliament was established in 1639, making it one of the oldest legislative assemblies in the Western Hemisphere and among the oldest continuously functioning parliaments in the world outside the United Kingdom. It is older than many of Europe's current legislative institutions.

  • Why is Bridgetown a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

The Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. The garrison, built in the late 17th century as a British military complex, is one of the best-preserved examples of British colonial military architecture in the Caribbean. The site includes barracks, a racecourse, and the Main Guard building.

  • When was Bridgetown founded?

The British settlement that became Bridgetown was established in 1628. The site was chosen for its natural harbor on the southwestern coast of the island. Barbados had been uninhabited when the British arrived, having previously been inhabited by Arawak and Carib peoples who had left before European contact.

  • Is Bridgetown the largest city in Barbados?

Yes. Bridgetown is the largest city in Barbados and, given that the country is a small island of about 430 square kilometers, it functions as the country's only significant urban center. The Greater Bridgetown area encompasses a large share of the island's total population of around 280,000.

Sights and landmarks

The historic centre of Bridgetown and its Garrison have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2011 as the best-preserved example of British colonial architecture in the Caribbean. The Parliament Building from 1871 in neo-Gothic style houses the third-oldest legislature in the Commonwealth. The Barbados Museum in a former military prison from 1817 displays Arawak artefacts and plantation history. St. Michael's Cathedral from 1789 and the Nidhe Israel Synagogue from 1654, one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere, testify to religious diversity. The Garrison Savannah formerly served as a parade ground for British troops and has hosted horse racing since 1845.

Climate and best time to visit

Bridgetown has a tropical monsoon climate (Am) with temperatures year-round between 24 and 31 degrees Celsius. Constant northeast trade winds significantly moderate the heat and give Barbados a more pleasant summer than many other Caribbean islands. Annual rainfall totals around 1,270 millimetres, concentrated in the wet season from June to November. The dry season from December to May is the optimal time to visit. Because Barbados occupies the most easterly position in the Caribbean, hurricanes strike it less frequently than more westerly islands, although Hurricane Elsa in 2021 caused significant damage.

Culture and customs

The culture of Bridgetown is a blend of Afro-Caribbean heritage and British traditions, reflected in the afternoon tea culture, cricket and left-hand-side driving. The annual Crop Over Festival in July and August marks the end of the sugar harvest and culminates in the Grand Kadooment parade. Barbados is the birthplace of rum, with Mount Gay from 1703 being the world's oldest commercial rum distillery. Flying fish with cou-cou is the national dish. Famous Bajans include singer Rihanna, born in 1988 in Bridgetown, and cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers. The population is predominantly Anglican.

Economy

The Barbadian economy relies heavily on tourism, which generates around 40% of GDP, and on international business services including captive insurance and holding companies. Bridgetown houses the Central Bank of Barbados and the Barbados Stock Exchange. The Port of Bridgetown is a major cruise destination receiving around one million landing passengers per year. The sugar industry, once the economic foundation, has shrunk to a small residual sector. The financial sector was affected by OECD pressure on tax havens, leading to reforms in 2018 and a unified corporate tax rate of 5.5% to 1% depending on profit.
