About San Salvador

Founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1525, San Salvador has served as the seat of government of El Salvador since 1834, when the capital was transferred from Suchitoto. The city was repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, most severely in 1854, 1873, 1917, 1986, and 2001. El Salvador's 20th century was dominated by military governance and oligarchic control, culminating in a civil war from 1979 to 1992 in which an estimated 75,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced. The Chapultepec Peace Accords, signed in January 1992, ended the conflict. San Salvador became the centre of a radical political experiment under President Nayib Bukele, elected in 2019, who implemented mass incarceration policies targeting gangs (Maras) and declared a state of emergency in 2022 that suspended constitutional rights. In 2021, El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, though the policy was later scaled back under IMF pressure.

About El Salvador

El Salvador is a presidential republic and the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. The country underwent a peace process in 1992 following a 12-year civil war. President Nayib Bukele, re-elected in 2024 despite constitutional prohibitions on consecutive terms, has concentrated executive power and been criticised by human rights organisations for mass detention policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is San Salvador the capital of El Salvador?

San Salvador became the capital in 1834, replacing Suchitoto, which had served as the seat of government since independence. The decision reflected San Salvador's growing population and economic importance. The city had already been the seat of government of the colonial Intendancy of San Salvador and was the site of El Salvador's declaration of independence in 1821.

  • What happened during El Salvador's civil war?

El Salvador's civil war lasted from 1979 to 1992, pitting the US-backed military government against the FMLN (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front), a coalition of left-wing guerrilla groups. Approximately 75,000 people were killed, and around a million were displaced. The war was characterised by severe human rights abuses, including the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Romero in 1980 and the El Mozote massacre.

  • Was El Salvador really the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender?

Yes. In September 2021, El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender under the Bitcoin Law passed by the Legislative Assembly. The move was championed by President Bukele but criticised by the IMF and World Bank. El Salvador subsequently reached an agreement with the IMF in 2024 that required scaling back the mandatory acceptance of Bitcoin.

  • When did San Salvador become the capital of El Salvador?

San Salvador officially became the capital of El Salvador in 1834, though it had been the most important city since the colonial period. The city had previously served as the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala's Intendancy of San Salvador and was the seat of government during the brief Central American Federation before full independence.

  • Is San Salvador the largest city in El Salvador?

Yes. San Salvador is El Salvador's largest city, with approximately 526,000 residents in the municipality and around 2.4 million in the greater metropolitan area. The San Salvador metropolitan area accounts for roughly a third of the country's total population, making it the dominant political, economic, and cultural centre of the country.

Sights and landmarks

The centre of San Salvador is dominated by the Catedral Metropolitana, where Archbishop Óscar Romero is buried — assassinated in 1980 during Mass and canonised in 2018. The Palacio Nacional from 1911 in classical style stands on Plaza Barrios. The Museo Nacional de Antropología David J. Guzmán displays pre-Columbian artefacts from the Pipil and Maya cultures. The Museo de Arte de El Salvador (MARTE) in Colonia San Benito is the principal art museum. The Iglesia El Rosario in modernist concrete with rainbow stained-glass windows is architecturally remarkable. Outside the city the Joya de Cerén ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, offer the best-preserved Maya village burial under volcanic ash.

Climate and best time to visit

San Salvador has a tropical savanna climate (Aw) at 658 metres above sea level, which tempers temperatures compared to the Pacific coast. The average annual temperature is around 23 degrees Celsius, with daily highs of 28–32 degrees and cool nights of 16–19 degrees. The dry season or verano runs from November to April and is the best travel time. The wet season or invierno brings daily afternoon showers from May to October and around 1,730 millimetres of annual rainfall. El Salvador lies on the Pacific coast and is therefore relatively protected from Atlantic hurricanes, though Tropical Storm Mitch in 1998 caused devastating floods.

Regional significance

San Salvador is the capital of the smallest and most densely populated country on the Central American mainland, with over 6 million inhabitants in just 21,000 square kilometres. The city has been defined by the dramatic security transformation since 2022, when President Nayib Bukele declared a state of emergency and arrested more than 75,000 suspected gang members. El Salvador has thereby transformed its murder rate from one of the highest in the world to one of the lowest on the continent. The country became the first in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, a controversial decision that drew international attention. The roughly 2.5 million Salvadorans in the United States provide crucial remittances.

Economy

Remittances from the United States contribute around 24% of GDP, the highest percentage in Central America. San Salvador is the commercial centre with headquarters of Banco Cuscatlán and regional conglomerate Grupo Poma. Free trade zones around the city produce textiles and clothing for the US market under the CAFTA-DR agreement. The Salvadoran economy was dollarised in 2001, making the US dollar the national currency, with Bitcoin added as a second legal tender in 2021. The Bukele government has invested heavily in security and infrastructure, partly financed through multilateral loans and the controversial Bitcoin strategy.
