About Moroni

Moroni is the capital of the Union of the Comoros, an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa. The city is located on Grande Comore (Ngazidja), the largest of the three islands that make up the country. Moroni served as the administrative center during French colonial rule and became the capital of independent Comoros in 1975. The Comoros holds the record for the highest number of coups per capita of any country in the world, more than 20 coups or attempted coups since independence in 1975. This extraordinary instability has made continuous governance from Moroni exceptionally difficult. The country's political structure has shifted repeatedly: Comoros experimented with a rotating presidency system, in which the presidency cycled among the three islands, in an attempt to reduce inter-island tensions. A fourth island in the archipelago, Mayotte, voted to remain French in 1974 and is now a French overseas department, a territorial dispute that remains unresolved. President Azali Assoumani, who first came to power in a 1999 coup, won elections in 2019 and 2024 amid allegations of manipulation.

About Comoros

The Union of the Comoros is a federal presidential republic comprising three islands: Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Mohéli. The political system has been repeatedly interrupted by coups since independence in 1975, and the constitution has been rewritten multiple times. A 2018 constitutional referendum, criticized by the opposition as illegitimate, removed the rotating presidency and extended presidential terms. The island of Mayotte, geographically part of the Comoros archipelago, is administered as a French overseas department and is claimed by Comoros. The country is one of the poorest in the world and is heavily dependent on remittances from the Comorian diaspora.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When did Moroni become the capital of Comoros?

Moroni became the capital of the independent Republic of Comoros on July 6, 1975, when the Comoros Islands unilaterally declared independence from France. The city had served as the colonial administrative center under French rule and retained this role at independence.

  • Why has Comoros experienced so many coups?

Since independence in 1975, Comoros has experienced more than 20 coups or attempted coups, more than any other country relative to its size. Contributing factors include extreme poverty, political exclusion of the smaller islands, competition among political and military elites, and foreign mercenary involvement, particularly by the French mercenary Bob Denard, who participated in multiple coups.

  • What is the dispute over Mayotte?

Mayotte is the fourth island of the Comoros archipelago but remains French territory. In the 1974 referendum on independence, Mayotte voted to remain with France while the other three islands voted for independence. France administered Mayotte separately, and in 2011 it became a full French overseas department. Comoros continues to claim Mayotte as part of its territory, but this position has no practical effect.

  • What was the rotating presidency system in Comoros?

To address tensions between the three islands, Comoros adopted a rotating presidency system in its 2001 constitution, under which the presidency alternated among Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Mohéli on a fixed schedule. This system was abolished in a 2018 constitutional referendum pushed through by President Azali Assoumani, which also extended presidential terms to five years.

  • Is Moroni the largest city in Comoros?

Yes. Moroni is the largest city in Comoros and the country's sole significant urban center. It is located on Grande Comore, the largest island. The population of Moroni is estimated at around 62,000, while the total national population is approximately 900,000.

Sights and landmarks

The Old Friday Mosque (Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi) from 1427 is a whitewashed Swahili-Arab structure on the harbour quay of Moroni. The Medina, the winding old city centre, houses traditional coral stone houses with wooden balconies in Shirazi style. The National Museum CNDRS displays volcanic geology and the coelacanth, the prehistoric fish still caught in local waters. Just outside the city, the active volcano Karthala (2,361 m) dominates Grande Comore; the crater is a popular two-day trek. The Volo Volo market complex is the lively commercial heart.

Climate and best time to visit

Moroni has a tropical monsoon climate with warm temperatures year-round between 23 and 31 °C. The rainy season (kashkazi) runs from November to April with around 2,700 mm of rainfall per year, one of the highest levels in East Africa. The dry season (kusi), from May to October, brings cooler trade winds and is the best travel period for Moroni and visitors to the archipelago. Cyclones can strike the islands between January and April; Cyclone Kenneth caused major damage to Moroni and its surroundings in 2019. Humidity remains high year-round above 75%.

Culture and customs

Comorian culture is a unique blend of Bantu, Arab, Persian (Shirazi) and Malagasy influences. The language spoken in Moroni is Shikomori, a Bantu language related to Swahili; French and Arabic are official languages. Sunni Islam dominates (98%) and defines Comorian identity. The Grand Mariage (Anda) is a unique Comorian phenomenon: an elaborate wedding lasting several days that determines a man's social standing; many men work for years in France to cover the costs. Ylang-ylang flowers, cloves and vanilla perfume the islands, which supply globally important perfume ingredients.
